New public sculpture by Bencsik in Buda

2010 October 14.

Talks are advanced about the realization of the public-space work that won the jury’s recommendation is now officially approved. The Municipality of Budapest’s 12th District wishes to erect its own memorial to the civilian victims in the district of the siege of Budapest in the Second World War. It is to be a new scene for remembrance while the memorial for military victims of the battle in the district is also preserved.

The Sculpture Committee chose the proposal of sculptor István Bencsik and architect László Rádóczy (f) from among 23 applications in 2008.

“The place assigned for the memorial lies by busy Alkotás Road. The proposal considers the area as a whole, provides architectural separation from the traffic, and thus a relatively secure environment for the sculpture. The focus of the memorial, the sculpture of the cut-out and magnified detail of nails digging into a palm, is a novel, original and powerful symbol of pain. In what seems a mutually inspiring cooperation, the sculptor and the architect have created an intelligent monument that adds to the urban environment. It enhances the city as it both engages with its context and improves its quality. The proposal also includes plans for the landscaping, the footpath, the street furniture, the lighting and the drainage.”
